Seabirds are an important part of our local ecology however they can cause a nuisance to local people from their raucous cries. In addition to their loud wailing and screeching, gulls can cause damage to property. During the nesting season April - June, they have been known to attack both people and pets. The regular feeding of gulls should be discouraged as it encourages abnormal numbers of birds to the feeding area which in turn can cause nuisance to neighbouring properties. Gulls which regularly feed in the same location will often decide to nest on the roofs of domestic properties which are close by. This can lead to properties being damaged by bird droppings, blocked roof gutters and broken roof tiles / slates. When protecting their eggs and young during the breeding season the adult birds will often "dive bomb" people  and each year the local Environmental Health Section receives several reports of these frightening experiences. It is always preferable to discourage gulls from nesting on a roof than to destroy the nests once the birds have started breeding. This can be done in many ways and various devices are readily available on the market to deter gulls from building their nests on roofs.
